Bulgaria: Flu Epidemic Declared in Yambol, Stara Zagora, Bourgas

SOFIA, November 2. (BTA). Regional epidemiological authorities declared Monday a state of flu epidemic in Yambol, Stara Zagora and Bourgas.

Bourgas municipality called off all mass cultural events. From today until November 7 school classes have been suspended on the entire territory of the municipality by decision of the regional team of experts responsible for the fight against flu and severe respiratory conditions.

In Yambol, the number of people who fell victim to such conditions last week reached 362 per 10,000. Students account for the largest number of patients which led to a "flu holiday" being declared until November 6.

Visits to hospital patients have also been suspended, as well as planned surgical operations. Hospital staff must wear medical masks and work of pediatric and pregnancy consulting centres has also been suspended.

In Stara Zagora, the number of patients with respiratory conditions reached 217.48 per 10,000. The highest rate was registered among children below 4 years of age and school students.

A state of flu epidemic was also declared in Gabrovo, Varna, Vratsa and Samokov.

A flu epidemic was declared in Pleven and Turgovishte on October 29.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Bozhidar Nanev told a news conference that the number cases with a lethal outcome as a result of the new flu virus A/H1N1/ has already risen to three. The latest, 30-year-old woman from Shivachevo, Sliven region, died on October 30.

The Health Ministry said that there are 305 cases of proven virus carriers in Bulgaria, up from the 277 cases two days ago.

The new flu is not much different from the other varieties and most cases pass easily, without need of special treatment, Nanev said. He asked for a more realistic media tone - without underestimating the situation but also without creating excessive tension.
